Golf carts make it easy and enjoyable to get around a large course quickly without having to lug all your gear around with you from hole to hole. Whether you’ve got your own or you’re renting from the course, you’ll want to make sure that you’re practicing good golf cart etiquette. It takes some skill and thought to operate a golf cart without wrecking the course and disturbing other golfers, or even injuring yourself or doing damage to the cart.

To avoid all of these mishaps, check out this guide to golf cart etiquette by Dever Golf Car Sales. Our dealership has locations in Lexington and Louisville to better serve our customers throughout Kentucky, so visit us if you’re looking to buy your own golf cart!

Follow The 90° Rule

If signs or attendants on the golf course make reference to the “90° Rule,” you’ll want to make sure that you follow it. This rule means that the golf course permits you to drive from the path to your ball, provided you do it at a 90° angle. To do this, drive your cart along the path until you are perpendicular to where your ball is located, then make a sharp turn and drive onto the course in a straight line to the ball. This minimizes the amount of time your cart is on the course, saving wear and tear on the Grass.

“Cart Path Only”

Some days, the course will mandate that you use your golf cart only on the cart path, and signs will indicate this. You’ll have to drive to where you’re in line with your ball, then park your cart and walk to your shot. It’s not a bad idea to ask the course attendants when you arrive what rules are in place on any given day.

Pay Mind To Signs

You’ll see several signs posted along the path and throughout the golf course. Pay attention to these signs since they can tell you what the rules for the course are that day or alert you to certain conditions like construction or weather damage on the course. If you don’t know what you should or shouldn’t be doing, you can always ask an attendant. If you see a “No Carts Beyond This Point” sign, then you’ll have to turn around and find another way to go.

No Joyriding

While it might seem like fun to tear around the golf course at top speed in your cart with no regard for others or for the sport, this is considered to be very rude and likely will not be tolerated for long by the course management. Use your cart at reasonable speeds to transport yourself and your equipment from one shot to the next. Know that you’ll be responsible for any damages to the cart if it belongs to the golf course.

Use Common Sense

Finally, you should use your head when driving a golf cart to avoid offending other golfers and getting yourself in hot water. Generally, you should remain behind other golfers when driving your golf cart. Even if they’re very far away, an errant ball could still hit you or a passenger if you’re driving in front of their shot.

If you are new to the sport of golf, the most important thing to remember is that golf is a game that requires a great deal of concentration. Even the slightest movement or sound can interrupt a golfer’s focus and cause them to miss their shot. To that end, you should avoid playing loud music or having a loud conversation on your golf cart as you drive around the course. Be as quiet as you can be and don’t distract others.
