Check Your Cart Before Departure
You don’t need to do a full repair of your golf cart before every excursion, but you should check it for signs of damage so you can ensure it won’t break down on you in the middle of the golf course. Check the tire pressure to make sure it’s up to code, look at the battery to make sure it’s connected and not corroded, top up fuel and oil, make sure the suspension is intact, and see that lights and signals function properly. To keep the gears moving, a grease gun is handy to have.
Safety Preparation
While you work on your golf cart, it’s important to wear the right gear to keep yourself protected. Gloves are essential when working on the engine and other moving parts, particularly the battery. Wear goggles to keep fluids or debris from getting in your eyes. Make sure that your cart is securely parked in place so it doesn’t move while you’re working on it. Also, check your owner’s manual before making any repairs or doing any maintenance so you know that you’re doing what’s right for your particular vehicle.
Electric Golf Carts
The two types of golf carts are electric and gas powered. When working on your electric golf cart, make sure the battery is clean and uncorroded and that all wires and connections are strong. Clean the terminals while wearing gloves, using a mixture of baking soda and water. Remove any dirt and debris you find around the battery.
You should make sure that your battery stays charged when your vehicle isn’t in use by hooking it up to a trickle charger. If your battery is older and seems to have lost power, check the battery acid levels, and replace your battery if anything seems amiss. Use a 15 amp charging cord with your battery since anything stronger may start a fire in your golf cart.
Gas Golf Carts
As for your gas-fueled golf cart, you’ll want to check the solenoid that runs between the engine and ignition. If this doesn’t work, then your golf cart won’t function. Take a voltmeter and attach it to the solenoid terminal and the grounding terminal. Turn the key in your ignition as you press down the accelerator. Your voltmeter should show a current passing through, but if there isn’t a clicking sound, then your solenoid may need to be checked by a professional.
Inspect your spark plugs every so often to make sure they aren’t dirty and that the spacing is even. Pull one out with a spark plug wrench to make sure the ceramic casing is intact. You’ll also want to look over fuel and air filters as well as the drive belt, and replace any of these if they are dirty or worn.
