One of the many unique aspects of golf is the type of clothing worn on the golf course. You never see golfers in raggy T-shirts or ripped jeans; instead, everyone typically looks like they’re wearing their Sunday best or they’re dressed in nice athletic clothing. Your attire at the golf course should be functional and comfortable, but it also needs to uphold a certain standard. Here are some tips on how to dress for the golf course.

Choose Solid Colors Over Prints

While your regular wardrobe might be full of fun, bold prints, these can be seen as too casual and also distracting on the golf course. Additionally, if you’re participating in or watching a filmed tournament, they don’t look very good on camera.

Don’t Look Too Casual

Casual garments like T-shirts, spaghetti straps, and tank tops are not really appropriate wear for the golf course. It’s best to wear a collared shirt, such as a polo shirt or a button-down shirt with either short or long sleeves. A sweater vest or light jacket can help you stay warm in cooler weather. Bermuda shorts, chinos, khakis, or any other nice slacks are appropriate for bottoms.

Women can wear a nice sundress or a polo top with Bermuda shorts or a tennis skirt, or they can also stick to slacks and chinos. Jewelry should be elegant and not distracting; it should also not get in the way of playing the game, so avoid any long chains, thick bracelets, chunky rings, or heavy pendants.

Proper Footwear is Key

While golf spikes or cleats were very commonly worn in the past, they’re no longer considered appropriate footwear for the golf course. This is primarily due to the damage they cause to the green.

Other shoes to avoid include anything that looks shabby or worn, like your old Converse sneakers, or anything that looks too casual. Flip-flops and clogs are both dangerous options because they can increase your risk of twisting your ankle since these shoes don’t provide a lot of stability. You should also avoid anything with a tall stiletto heel.

For women, low wedges or block heels are appropriate, as well as dressy sandals or tennis shoes. Male golfers usually wear lace-up tennis shoes or slip-on loafers. If it’s raining, you might want to wear some rainboots instead. Shoes that keep you upright and stable and comfortable are your best option; just make sure they look nice!

Avoid at All Costs

There are a number of articles of clothing that you should never wear to a golf course. Denim is typically frowned upon because it’s so casual. The same goes for gear like yoga pants or short-shorts. As noted above, no one will wear a T-shirt to the golf course, either. If you need additional guidance, you can check with the rules posted by your local golf club to see what types of clothing they recommend.
