Replacing Your Golf Cart's Tires
While your golf cart’s tires are designed to last for a long time, they will wear down, like any other vehicle’s tires. It’s important to replace tires when you notice a reduction in gas mileage or poor performance, as driving on old tires is very risky and can put you or others in jeopardy. Tire maintenance and replacement is simply part of owning a golf cart, which is why we’ve provided you with some guidance on when you should replace your golf cart tires to keep your vehicle performing optimally and safely.
Why Driving on Bad Tires Isn’t Safe
You might think that, just because you’re driving a golf cart and cruising around the fairway, you’re not really in danger if you’ve neglected your golf cart’s tires. But think about the speeds that your golf cart can reach and how many people and vehicles you encounter: you’re liable to put someone else at risk if you lose control of your golf cart out of nowhere.
Also, golf carts don’t generally come with seat belts that will keep you secured in the event of an impact, which means that you and your passengers could be thrown out of the cart if a tire blows on you. This is why keeping tabs on your golf cart tires is so crucial.
When Should You Replace Tires?
There are a couple of things to watch for while operating your golf cart that can be indications of worn tires, including:
- Slower speed: Your golf cart likely won’t be able to go as fast if the tires aren’t aired up correctly, and if you know you’ve aired them up recently and you’re still having issues getting your golf cart up to speed, then this may indicate that one or more of your tires has a leak in it.
- Thin treads: If you look at your tires and see metallic threads showing through the rubber, avoid driving your golf cart until you’ve replaced the tires, as this means the tread is far too thin to be safe.
- Rubber cracks: Looking at your tires, you may notice that the rubber has begun to crack on the sidewalls. Tiny cracks aren’t an issue, but large cracks can lead to a tire blowout, which could send you careening into something.
